The Underlying Working Principle
The core of VPSA’s efficient operation lies in the selective adsorption of molecular sieves. When air enters the adsorption tower, the molecular sieve’s porous structure (with a pore size of 0.3-0.5nm) allows oxygen molecules (diameter 0.296nm) to pass through while trapping nitrogen molecules (diameter 0.304nm) through van der Waals forces. The low-pressure adsorption (0.1-0.3MPa) ensures that the molecular sieve can adsorb nitrogen efficiently without requiring high-energy compression of air.
During vacuum desorption, the negative pressure environment reduces the partial pressure of nitrogen, breaking the adsorption equilibrium, and nitrogen is desorbed from the molecular sieve. The dual-tower design ensures that one tower is in adsorption while the other is in desorption, achieving continuous oxygen production.
