Since the density of the carriers is close to that of water, they mix completely with the water during aeration, creating a microbial growth environment encompassing gas, liquid, and solid phases.

The collision and shearing action of the carriers in the water break down bubbles into smaller sizes, improving oxygen utilization efficiency. Moreover, different types of microorganisms grow on the inner and outer surfaces of each carrier. Anaerobic or facultative bacteria thrive inside the carriers, while aerobic bacteria colonize the outer surfaces. This configuration turns each carrier into a micro-reactor, enabling simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, thus enhancing the overall treatment performance.
