Working Principle

The engine thermostat is the "intelligent temperature switch" of the engine cooling system. Its core operating principle is based on the physical expansion of heat-sensitive wax:

Low-temperature state: When the engine coolant temperature is below the thermostat's opening temperature (e.g., 87.8°C), the wax solidifies, and a spring pushes the main valve closed. The coolant bypasses the radiator and only undergoes a "minor circulation" within the engine, rapidly warming the engine.

High-temperature state: When the coolant temperature reaches or exceeds the opening temperature, the wax melts and expands rapidly. The resulting pressure pushes against the hose and center push rod, overcoming the spring pressure and gradually opening the main valve. Some coolant then flows through the radiator for a "major circulation," where it is cooled before entering the engine.

Regulation process: The valve opening changes with temperature, dynamically adjusting the coolant flow rate to stabilize the engine temperature within the optimal range for efficient operation.
