Boron nitride is isoelectronic with carbon, and like carbon, it has several allotropes. Hexagonal boron nitride (α-BN) has a structure similar to graphite and is a very practical lubricant. Cubic boron nitride (β-BN) has a structure similar to diamond, with a hardness second only to diamond, but superior high-temperature resistance.
