The function of the steering knuckle

I. Core Function 1: Load Bearing and Shock Absorption to Support Vehicle Weight

1.Vehicle weight is transmitted to the steering knuckle through the suspension system (e.g., shock absorbers, lower control arms), then from the steering knuckle to the wheel hub and wheels, ultimately acting on the ground;

2.When driving over rough roads or potholes, impact forces from the road surface are transferred to the steering knuckle via the wheels and hubs. The steering knuckle cushions these impacts through flexible connections with the suspension (cooperating with shock absorbers), reducing body vibration and ensuring driving stability;

3.Key Requirement: The steering knuckle must be made of high-strength cast iron or forged aluminum alloy, with sufficient rigidity and impact resistance to prevent deformation or fracture under load (which directly affects driving safety).

II. Core Function 2: Transmitting Steering Force to Enable Wheel Steering

1.The steering knuckle is connected to the tie rod and suspension lower control arm via a "kingpin" (or ball joint), forming a rotatable mechanical structure;

2.When the driver turns the steering wheel, the steering force output by the steering gear is transmitted to the steering knuckle through the tie rod, pushing the steering knuckle to pivot around the kingpin (or ball joint center). This in turn drives the hub and wheels to rotate synchronously, enabling the vehicle to turn left, right, or correct straight-line travel;

3.Key Design: The steering knuckle’s deflection angle (steering angle) must be precisely matched to the vehicle’s design to ensure no interference between the wheel and tires/suspension components during steering. It also guarantees steering flexibility and return performance (the ability to automatically revert to straight-line travel after steering).

III. Core Function 3: Connecting Multiple Components to Integrate Functional Interfaces

1.Connecting Hub and Bearing: The steering knuckle’s spindle houses the wheel hub bearing, and the hub fits over the spindle via the bearing—allowing the wheel to rotate flexibly (the steering knuckle remains fixed while the hub drives the wheel);

2.Mounting Brake Components: The outer side of the steering knuckle is typically designed with a brake caliper bracket (for disc brakes) or brake drum mounting surface (for drum brakes), directly securing the brake caliper and brake disc (or drum). It serves as a critical mounting base for the braking system (during braking, the caliper clamps the disc to generate stopping force, which is transmitted to the vehicle body via the steering knuckle to decelerate the vehicle);

3.Linking to the Suspension System: The steering knuckle connects to the lower control arm, upper control arm (or shock absorber strut) via ball joints and bushings, forming the suspension’s elastic support structure. It coordinates with the suspension’s vertical movement to ensure the wheel remains in contact with the ground at all times;

4.Adapting to Other Functional Parts: On some vehicles, the steering knuckle also integrates mounting seats for ABS sensors (securing wheel speed sensors to monitor wheel rotation and provide signals for ABS/ESP systems), steering stoppers (limiting the maximum steering angle to avoid component interference), and other interfaces.
