Alloy 400 is a solid solution alloy that can only be hardened by cold work. The nickel alloy has good corrosion resistance, good weldability and high strength. The low corrosion rate in fast flowing salt water or seawater, the excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in most fresh water and its resistance to various corrosion conditions lead to its wide use in marine applications and other non oxidizing chloride solutions. This nickel alloy is particularly resistant to hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid during degassing. As expected by its high copper content,

Alloy 400 has good mechanical properties at sub zero temperature and can be used at temperatures up to 1000 ° F. its melting point is 2370-2460 ° F. However, alloy 400 has low strength in the annealed state, so various tempering can be used to increase strength.
