The air can be collided freely under the action of a certain electric field strength. The discharge voltage of the air gap under a uniform or slightly uneven electric field has a certain relationship with the gap distance. So The ball gap can use the gap discharge for high voltage discharge protection. The ball gap is composed of a pair of metal balls with the same diameter. When the ball gap diameter D is larger than the ball gap distance L, the ball gap electric field is basically a slightly uneven electric field. The discharge voltage is determined only by the distance of the ball gap.
